We’ve already covered some common oven problems you may experience in our previous blog: 4 Common Oven Problems. Click over there if you’re struggling with: your oven not turning on, incorrect temperatures, the oven light not working, or the oven door not opening or closing.

If you’re not struggling with any of those issues, keep reading to learn about some more common oven problems and what you can do about them. Let’s dive in!

#1. Not Heating

If your oven won’t heat, it’s no better than a strange sort of pantry. The last thing you want is to put a delicious dish into the oven – only to find out that it isn’t cooking. This is one of the most common oven problems that people encounter.

The reason for this depends on whether you have a gas oven or an electric oven. If you have a gas oven, you could have a faulty igniter or a problem with the gas line. If you have an electric oven, you could have a faulty heating element.

You can typically replace faulty ignitors and heating elements. You always want to ensure that your oven is off before you do this. However, you may not be able to do this on your own. In which case, it’s best to call in the pros.

#2. Won’t Self-Clean

If your oven won’t self-clean, you can technically clean it yourself, true. However, not many people would prefer to bust out the rubber gloves and cleaning materials when your oven should be able to clean itself. It’s important to keep your oven clean in order to prevent problems like smoking – more on that below.

First, you want to ensure that you’re following the manufacturer’s directions. If you don’t do this properly, your oven may not clean itself. Second, you want to keep in mind the fact that the self-cleaning setting isn’t a miracle worker. You’ll still have some ash that you will need to clean yourself and the like.

Another potential reason for this oven problem is if you have a malfunctioning door lock switch, as well as electrical issues.

If your oven won’t self-clean and you’re sure that you’re following manufacturer instructions, an appliance repair technician should be able to fix it.

#3. You See Smoke

If you see smoke coming from your oven, this isn’t always cause for significant concern, although you definitely want to address them sooner than later. This usually results from cooking issues, like when your casserole spills over the edges of the dish while cooking. You want to ensure that you clean up any food spills in order to prevent further problems.

Another reason why you may see smoke when using your oven is if it is new. This is because new ovens can have factory coatings on them that are burning off during the first couple of uses. Be sure that you set your oven to the recommended temperature prior to utilizing it.

However, if you still see smoke, this is an oven problem that can result from technical issues. This is something that needs to be seen to by a professional.
