If your refrigerator isn’t working properly, we understand how frustrating it can be. Like all appliances, fridges need routine maintenance to ensure they work properly. The average fridge will last approximately 10-15 years with the right maintenance. Here are the most common refrigerator problems and how to fix them.
Refrigerator Problems
Buildup When there is build-up inside the freezer, it stems from problems with the self-defrost system. Damaged door gaskets are another common problem with freezer as they allow blasts of warm air into the freezer, causing the compressor to work harder. Humidity in the air will come inside the freezer, which causes water to freeze onto the evaporator coils. Freezers with the self-defrost are designed to defrost every 6-12 hours as the compressor turns off and a defrost heater turns on to melt the build-up on the coils. The ice will melt and drain underneath the freezer into a pan. If one of the component fails, the evaporator coils can end up with too much buildup and no airflow over the coils will cause freezing of water on the coils. While most homeowners can reset their freezer by turning it off for a day or longer, others freezers will need the defrost thermostat, heater, or timer replaced.
Water Leaks Water leaks are often due from a blocked or clogged defrost drain or water line. To fix the leak, unclog drain with warm water and a pipe cleaner. If that doesn’t work, contact Vanderdoes Home Services.
Broken Ice maker If your ice maker breaks, it’s mostly due to a clogged water inlet valve or broken ice-making mechanism.
Warm Fridge If you notice your fridge’s temperature is above the acceptable range, it’s mostly due to dirty condenser coils. We recommend cleaning these coils every 12 to 18 months to keep your freezer’s temperature zero degrees or lower. If the condensor fan or evaporator fan is broken, our professional technicians are here to help.
