Fall Checklist to Keep Appliances Running Properly

How have your appliances been fairing this year? Are they starting to show signs of wear and tear? Are you noticing your appliances are making noise, or not keeping your food cold or clothing washed? All appliances need some simple maintenance performed from time to time in order to make them run effectively. Here is our fall checklist to keep your appliances running properly.

Clean Out the Fridge

One appliance that we use daily, but neglect often, is the fridge. Take the time to clean everything out of your fridge and toss that old, expired food. Check on the cooling settings and adjust them. As the weather gets cooler, your home may stay cooler, allowing you to adjust that fridge temperature so it won’t need to work as hard. In addition to the clean out, take the time to wash your fridge and remove old food. Unplug the fridge when you do this so you do not have any issues. Allow the freezer to thaw, and pull the fridge out from the wall and clean under it. Far too often people forget about the blower on the bottom of the fridge and those fans are normally coated in dirt, dust, and food. Use a vacuum to clean all the dust off the coils of your fridge to keep it working correctly. Check on the seal of the fridge door as well to see if you have a leak that needs to have new sealant stripping placed on the door.

Clean the Dishwasher

Did you know most dishwashers have a filter that needs cleaning? Take a look at your owners manual to find out where your filter is, and if you can remove it to clean it. Vinegar and baking soda work well to clean out the filter, but you can also use speciality products to clean the filter. Rust on the lines of your dishwasher racks is another concern. You will want to purchase a tine repair kit and seal the racks to prevent rust from ruining your dishes and silverware.

Garbage Disposal Cleaning

A garbage disposal is a trap for food, and it won’t take much for it to smell. You need to unplug the disposal when you clean it and use tongs to pull out anything inside that is stuck. Then, use some baking soda and pour it down the disposal, then use some vinegar to help clean it. Now, plug the disposal back in and place some ice cubes inside and turn it on to see it clean!

Clean the Dryer

The dryer is like the fridge and it is an appliance we need, but often neglect. You need to clean the dryer by removing the dryer vent completely and vacuuming it out. Remove all the excess lint from the vent. Clean inside the dryer as well and vacuum up any loose lint that is left behind. Dryers are a major fire hazard that can be prevented with a little maintenance!

Replace the Furnace Filter

The furnace and air conditioning filter is one thing that is easy to replace, but like other things, its neglected. You need to change this monthly to reduce the amount of dust, dirt, and debris that flows through the ventilation system. Clogged or dirty air filters will restrict air flow, and it causes the blower motor to work harder. We recommend monthly replacing of the filter, or even bi-monthly if you notice a large amount of dust and debris on your filter.
