What’s That Sound? Are Your Appliances Breaking?

kyle0360

Have you ever found yourself hearing strange sounds from a fridge? Is it making a whining noise, or do you have a dishwasher motor running loudly? When do you attempt to fix a broken appliance on your own, and when should you hire a professional? Here are some tips to troubleshoot problematic appliances.

Reset the Appliance

Flip the breaker if you have an appliance that has stopped working. Start by unplugging everything that is in that circuit breaker prior to resetting it. You don’t want to accidentally power-surge an appliance and cause it to break when you reset your breaker.

Replace Broken Cords

Do not allow your major appliances to share an outlet as it can overwhelm the circuit and cause an appliance to burn out. Another common issue is when the cord itself wears out and breaks down. You’ll need to get a new power cord to your appliance if you do notice its starting to show signs of aging.

Clean the Filter

Dishwashers, fridges, and dryers are just some of the appliances that have filters that must be cleaned. A dirty filter can reduce the efficiency of any appliance, causing additional stress on the motor. Appliances can run out years before they should due to maintenance issues like a dirty filter.

Look for Cracks

Appliances can get cracks around the seals. When you start seeing cracks, its time to replace the sealing around the appliance to prevent water from getting in or out, heat being lost, etc. You will need to check the instruction manual of your appliance to ensure you buy the right sealant, and you install it properly.
