Dishwasher Draining

When the dishwasher won’t drain properly, it leaves behind filthy water, odors, and possible issues with mold. Keeping the dishwasher drain working effectively is vital to keeping your dishes clean and sanitary.

Standing Water in The Dishwasher

One way to know you have problems is to take a look inside the dishwasher to see if you have standing water. Clean out the filter (located in the bottom of the dishwasher) drain as it could be clogged with large bits of food that need to be removed. Use a scrubber or toothbrush to clean off the filter to keep the water clean.

Clean the Garbage Disposal

The garbage disposal needs to be cleaned regularly as it is used as a drain for the dishwasher. Clean the disposal with hot water and soap, or you can try using an alternative option like using baking soda and vinegar. Keeping the garbage disposal clean and free of debris makes it easier for the dishwasher to drain the soapy water and food.

Check the Plumbing of the Dishwasher

It is important to keep the dishwasher plumbing system cleaned to ensure the water can drain properly. Look under the sink and identify what is known as the high loop. You want to make sure the hose is attached under the counter rim to make sure the water drains and is not allowed to drain backwards into the dishwasher. Keeping the drain water moving down the hose and into the disposal is important to drain out from the dishwasher.

Another section to check is known as the air gap. The air gap of a dishwasher has a small plastic or metal device that you find mounted to the countertop or sink with two hoses. Remove the hose and clean it out and click it back into place.

Is the Dishwasher Level?

For appliances to work correctly, you much make sure they are level. Keeping the dishwasher level will prevent the motor from running incorrectly, and helps the water drain in the right manner. Use a level and foot inserts to make the machine level if you find it is not balanced.

Load the Dishwasher Correctly

The dishwasher needs to be loaded in the right way in order to clean the dishes. Loading improperly causes the water to struggle to spray the dishes. On the same token, too much soap can lead to cleaning problems. Only use the recommended amount of soap to keep the machine functioning correctly.
