4 Common Washing Machine Issues

We need our washing machines to run properly in order to keep our clothes, towels, sheets, and the like clean. However, there are many different common washing machine issues that can affect how well your washing machine does its job. From not spinning to clothes being soaking wet to loud noises or unpleasant smells, there are many different washing machine issues that you’ll likely run into.

Here’s what you need to know about some of the most common washing machine issues.

#1. Your Washing Machine Won’t Spin

This is perhaps one of the most common washing machine issues people need help with. Your washing machine not spinning could be because of something as simple as too big of a load to more complex problems. Your washing machine can only take so much at once; there should be enough room for your wash to spin. If it’s all jammed in there, you’ll want to downsize your loads so that your washing machine can be balanced and spin.

If the problem isn’t overloading, then this washing machine issue could be because:

  1. You have a broken door latch or interlock.

  2. Your drive belt needs to be replaced.

  3. Your drain is blocked, which prevents the spin cycle from starting.

  4. You have a faulty drive motor or pump.

As with any washing machine issue, if you’re not sure what’s causing the problem or how to fix it, it’s best to contact a professional to come out and inspect your machine.

#2. Your Clothes Are Soaking Wet

Did you run your washing machine only for your clothes to be soaking wet by the end of the cycles? While your drying machine helps dry your clothes, if they’re soaking wet, it will likely take you running your dryer multiple times in order for them to finally get dry. They’re meant to be wet, sure, but your washing machine is supposed to wring most of the water out of your clothes during the spin process.

If you’re having this washing machine issue, there are a few potential reasons why.

  1. The spin is underpowered. This could be because you accidentally set the machine to a low spin setting or because of a mechanical problem with the belt, clutch, motor pulley, or tub bearings.

  2. It’s not draining properly. If you have this washing machine issue, it could be because your washing isn’t draining the water, which thus leads to soaking wet clothes. This could be because you have a clogged drain, a weak drain pump, or have drain siphoning.

  3. You’re oversudsing. The more, the better for clean clothes right? However, putting too much detergent in your washing machine can cause it to overflow with bubbles, which keeps your clothes from spinning properly.

  4. There’s a loose water inlet valve. This can cause water to always drip into your washing machine’s tub, soaking your clothes.

  5. There’s a cycle control problem. If you’re having this washing machine issue, your clothes could also be soaking wet because it’s having issues with the cycle controls, either in not triggering the spin cycle or stopping before even reaching the spin cycle. This could be because of a control panel malfunction, a loose door latch, or damaged hardware.

#3. It’s Noisy!

It’s expected that washing machines make some noise when they’re running. However, if they’re rattling around or being unusually loud, this could be because of a number of different problems. Your noisy washing machine issue could be because of something as simple as coins that fell out of a pocket and are rattling around the washing machine. It could also be because of a number of more complex issues, such as something getting caught in the drum.

If there’s a strange gurgling sound, this could be because you have a partially clogged washer drain line. You’ll want to take care of whatever is clogging the drain line before you have a potential flooding issue on your hands.

#4. It Smells… And Not Clean

There’s no question that if your washing machine smells bad, it probably isn’t going to do a very good job of cleaning your clothes. Washing machines can develop mold or mildew as a result of excess moisture. This both smells bad and can lead to health problems further down the line. Additionally, counterintuitive though it may seem, if you use too much detergent, this can result in dirty residue getting left behind, and ergo, odors.

It’s a good idea to clean your washing machine every month in order to prevent this washing machine issue and keep your clothes nice and fresh.
